City of Tavira



Tavira is a town located in the eastern (leeward) part of the Algarve, with a population of around 15,000. The city has a rich historical heritage and there are visible traces of the presence and settlement of various peoples. Tavira is known as the city of churches. In fact, the city has one of the most interesting sets of religious architecture with 37 churches. Tavira is a charming town that has not yet been de-characterized by the tourist industry, despite the fact that its coastline boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve and the country.

Ria Formosa



The Ria Formosa is a wetland located between the sea and the Algarve coast. It is one of the region's most beautiful natural treasures, due to the diversity of its habitats and its unique location. It has been a Natura Reserve since 1978 and was voted one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal in 2010.

Beaches



The municipality of Tavira is home to two of the five most important islands in the Ria Formosa: Ilha de Tavira and Ilha de Cabanas.

Tavira Island



The island of Tavira is a popular spot for tourists and stretches over an extensive 11 km stretch of sandy beach, calm waters and equipped with various beach support facilities (restaurants, bars, camping sites and others). There are four beaches along this long stretch of sand: Praia de Tavira, Praia de Terra Estreita/Sta Luzia, Praia do Barril/Pedras d'El Rei and Praia do Homem Nu.


Tavira beach and Terra Estreita beach can be reached by boat. The trips take just a few minutes. Barril beach can be reached on foot or by a small tourist train from Pedras d'El Rei.

Cabanas Island



Cabanas Island is part of the stretch of sand that runs from Fuzeta to Cacela Velha. The island consists of an extensive sandy coastline with dune formations that are covered in endemic vegetation and are home to various species. It is only about 70 m wide and 7 km long. The island can be reached by boat, and the journey takes just a few minutes, as the arm of the Ria that separates the island from the mainland is very short.

Golf Courses



There are several 18-hole golf courses in the region suitable for players with a wide range of experience levels. The courses, designed by renowned architects, are located in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, offering magnificent views of the sea, the salt marsh and the undulating landscape of the Algarve hills. Tavira beach and Terra Estreita beach can be reached by boat. The trips take just a few minutes. Barril beach can be reached on foot or by a small tourist train from Pedras d'El Rei.
